Restored English Translation of Genesis: Chapter 47

Today I present my Restored English Translation (RET) of the 47th chapter of the Sefer Beresheet, commonly known in English as the Book of Genesis.  As usual, it contains the Hebrew names, with a glossary of them after the chapter.  At the end is a list of where the Aleph Tavs occur, as they are no longer included in the main text.

In verse 31, the Masoretic Text (and most English translations) read “and he [Ya’akov/Jacob] bowed on the head of the bed.”  However, the Peshitta and Septuagint “and he bowed on the head of the staff”, which is confirmed by Hebrews 11:21, which I have therefore followed.

In verse 21, the Masoretic Text and Peshitta read “he [Yosef/Joseph] removed them from the cities”, which many English translations follow.  The Septuagint and Samaritan Pentateuch, however, read “made servants of them”.  I find the latter reading to make more sense, and have followed it.

CHAPTER 47

1 Then Yosef came and spoke to Pharaoh and said, “My father and my brothers, and their flocks, and their herds, and all that is to them, have come out of the land of Kena’an. And behold, they are in the land of Goshen.” 2 And he took 5 men from his brothers and presented them to Pharaoh. 3 And Pharaoh said to his brothers, “What is your occupation?” And they said to Pharaoh, “Your servants are shepherds of flocks, both we and our fathers.” 4 They said to Pharaoh, “We have come to stay in the land, for your servants have no pasture for their flocks; for the famine is severe in the land of Kena’an. And now please let your servants live in the land of Goshen.” 5 And Pharaoh spoke to Yosef, saying, “Your father and your brothers have come to you. 6 The land of Mitsrayim is before you. Make your father and your brothers to live in the best of the land; let them live in the land of Goshen. And if you know any capable men among them, then make them chiefs of livestock over what belongs to me.” 7 And Yosef brought in his father Ya’akov and stood him before Pharaoh. And Ya’akov blessed Pharaoh. 8 And Pharaoh said to Ya’akov, “How many are the days of the years of your life?” 9 And Ya’akov said to Pharaoh, “The days of the years of my abode are 130 years. The days of the years of my life been few and evil, and have not reached the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their abode.” 10 And Ya’akov blessed Pharaoh, and went out from before Pharaoh. 11 And Yosef placed his father and his brothers, and gave them a possession in the land of Mitsrayim, in the best of the land, in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh appointed. 12 And Yosef nourished his father and his brothers and all of his father’s house with food for the mouths of the children. 13 And there was no grain in all the land; for the famine was very sore, so that the land of Mitsrayim and all the land of Kena’an burned by reason of the famine. 14 And Yosef gathered all the silver that was found in the land of Mitsrayim and in the land of Kena’an, for the grain which they bought. And Yosef brought the silver into Pharaoh’s house. 15 And the silver failed in the land of Mitsrayim and in the land of Kena’an. All the Mitsrim came to Yosef and said, “Give us bread! For why should we die in your presence? For the silver has failed.” 16 And Yosef said, “Give your livestock, and I will give to you for your livestock, if the silver has failed.” 17 And they brought their possessions to Yosef. And Yosef gave them bread in exchange for horses, and for the livestock of the flocks, and for the livestock of the herds, and for the donkeys. And he fed them with bread for all their livestock in that year. 18 And that year ended. And they came to him in the second year and said to him, “We will not hide it from my master, how that our silver is finished, and the herds of the animals went to my master. Nothing is left in the sight of my master, but our bodies, and our lands. 19 Why should we die before your eyes, both we and our land? Buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be servants to Pharaoh. And give us seed that we may live, and not die, that the land not lie waste.” 20 And Yosef bought all the land of Mitsrayim for Pharaoh; for the Mitsrim sold every man his field, because the famine was strong over them. So the land became Pharaoh’s. 21 And as for the people, he made servants of them from one end of the borders of Mitsrayim to the other end. 22 Only he did not buy the land of the priests; for the priests had a portion assigned them from Pharaoh, and they ate their portion which Pharaoh gave to them. Therefore they did not sell their lands. 23 Then Yosef said to the people, “Behold, I have bought you and your land for Pharaoh today. Behold, here is seed for you, and you sow the land. 24 And it will be in the increase that you will give the 5th to Pharaoh, and four parts will be your own, for seed of the field, and for your food, and for them of your households, and for food for your little ones. 25 And they said, “You have saved our lives. Let us find grace in the sight of my master, and we will be Pharaoh’s servants. 26 And Yosef made it a law over the land of Mitsrayim to this day, that Pharaoh should have the fifth; except the land of the priests only, which did not become Pharaoh’s. 27 And Yisra’el lived in the land of Mitsrayim, in the country of Goshen. And they held fast in it, and were fruitful and multiplied exceedingly.
28 And Ya’akov lived 17 years in the land of Mitsrayim. So the days of Ya’akov, the years of his life, were 147 years. 29 And the time drew near that Yisra’el must die. And he called to his son Yosef and said to him, “If now I have found grace in your sight, please put your hand under my thigh, and deal kindly and truly with me. Please do not bury me in Mitsrayim. 30 But I will lie with my fathers, and you will carry me out of Mitsrayim, and bury me in their buryingplace.” And he said, “I will do as you have said.” 31 And he said, “Swear to me.” And he swore to him. And Yisra’el bowed himself on the staff’s head.
