Restored English Translation of Genesis: Chapter 48

Today I present my Restored English Translation (RET) of Beresheet (Genesis) chapter 48.  As usual, it contains the Hebrew names, with a glossary of them after the chapter.  At the end is a list of where the Aleph Tavs occur, as they are no longer included in the main text.

(Note: to clarify, this is MY OWN translation of the Bible.)

CHAPTER 48

1 And it was after these things that one told Yosef, “Behold, your father is sick.” And he took two his sons Menasheh and Efraim with him. 2 And one spoke to Ya’akov and said, “Behold, your son Yosef has come to you.” And Yisra’el strengthened himself, and sat on the bed. 3 And Ya’akov said to Yosef, “EL SHADDAI appeared to me at Luz in the land of Kena’an and blessed me, 4 and said to me, ‘Behold, I will make you fruitful and multiply you, and I will give you a multitude of people, and will give this land to your seed after you for an eternal possession.’ 5 And now your two sons, Efraim and Menasheh, who were born to you in the land of Mitsrayim before I came to you into Mitsrayim, they are to me; as Re’uven and Shimon, they will be to me. 6 And your offspring, whom you father after them will be to you, and will be called after the name of their brothers in their inheritance. 7 And as for me, when I came from Padan, Rachel died by me in the land of Kena’an in the way, when there was still a length of the land to come to Efratah. And I buried her there in the way of Efratah; the same is Beyt-Lechem.” 8 And Yisra’el saw Yosef’s sons and said, “Who are these?” 9 And Yosef said to his father, “They are my sons, whom ELOHIM has given me in this place.” And he said, “Please bring them to me, and I will bless them.” 10 Now the eyes of Yisra’el were heavy from age, so that he could not see. And he brought them near to him; and he kissed them, and embraced them. 11 And Yisra’el said to Yosef, “I had not thought to see your face. And behold, ELOHIM has also shown me your seed.” 12 And Yosef brought them out from standing by his knees, and he bowed his face to the earth. 13 And Yosef took both of them, Efraim in his right hand toward Yisra’el’s left hand, and Menasheh in his left hand toward Yisra’el’s right hand, and brought them near to him. 14 And Yisra’el stretched out his right hand and laid it on Efraim’s head, who was the younger, and his left hand upon Menasheh’s head, guiding his hands intelligently; for Menasheh was the firstborn. 15 And he blessed Yosef and said, “The ELOHIM, before whom my fathers Avraham and Yitschak did walk, The ELOHIM Who fed me all my life long to this day, 16 the messenger who redeemed me from all evil, bless the boys; and let my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers Avraham and Yitschak. And let them grow like fishes into a multitude in the midst of the earth.” 17 And Yosef saw that his father laid his right hand on the head of Efraim, and it displeased him. And he took his father’s hand, to take it from Efraim’s head to Menasheh’s head. 18 And Yosef said to his father, “Not so, my father, for this is the firstborn; put your right hand on his head.” 19 And his father refused and said, “I know, my son; I know. He also will be a people, and he also will be great; but his younger brother will be greater than he, and his descendants will be the fullness of nations.” 20 And he blessed them that day, saying, “In you will Yisra’el bless, saying, ‘ELOHIM make you as Efraim and as Menasheh.'” And he set Efraim before Menasheh. 21 And Yisra’el said to Yosef, “Behold, I am going to die. But ELOHIM will be with you, and bring you again to the land of your fathers. 22 Moreover I have given to you one spur above your brothers, which I took out of the hand of the Emori with my sword and with my bow.”
