Today I present my Restored English Translation (RET) of Beresheet (Genesis) chapter 49. As usual, it contains the Hebrew names, with a glossary of them after the chapter. At the end is a list of where the Aleph-Tavs occur, as they are no longer included in the main text.
And Ya’akov called to his sons and said, “Gather yourselves together, and I will tell you what will happen to you in the end days. 2 Gather yourselves together and hear, you sons of Ya’akov, and listen to your father Yisra’el. 3 Re’uven my firstborn, you are my strength, and the beginning of my vigour, the excess of exaltation, and the excess of power. 4 Like frothing as water you will not excel, because you went up to your father’s bed, then you defiled it. He went up to my couch.
“Shimon and Levi are brothers; instruments of violence are in their weapons. 6 Do not let my soul enter their secret; do not let my honour be joined to their assembly. For in their anger they killed a man, and in their pleasure they hamstrung a bullock. 7 Cursed be their anger, for it was fierce; and their wrath, for it was cruel. I will divide them in Ya’akov, and I will scatter them in Yisra’el.
“Yehudah, you will praise your brothers. Your hand will be on the neck of your enemies; your father’s sons will bow to you. 9 Yehudah is a lion’s cub. From the prey, my son, you have gone up. He stooped down, he crouched as a lion, and as a lioness who will rouse him? 10 The sceptre will not depart from Yehudah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come. And the obedience of the people will be to him. 11 Binding his foal to the vine, and his donkey’s colt to the choice vine; he washed his garments in wine, and his clothes in the blood of grapes. 12 His eyes shall be dark with wine, and his teeth white with milk.
“Zevulun will live at the cove of the sea; and he shall be for an cove for ships; and his border will be beside Tsidon.
“Yissakar is a strong donkey crouching down between the stalls. 15 And he saw that rest was good, and the land that was pleasant; and bowed his neck to bear, and became a slave worker.
“Dan will judge his people, as one of the tribes of Yisra’el. 17 Dan will be a serpent by the way, a horned adder in the path, that bites the horse heels, so that his rider will fall backward. 18 I have waited for Your salvation, YEHOVAH.
“Gad, attackers will attack him, but he will attack their heel.
“ Of Asher, his food will be fat, and he will give a king’s delicacies.
“Naftali is a deer let loose; he gives beautiful words.
“Yosef is a fruitful son, even a fruitful son by a fountain, whose daughters run over a wall. 23 Arrow masters made him bitter and shot at him, and lurk for him. 24 But his bow remains permanent, and the arms of his hands were solidified by the hands of the Mighty One of Ya’akov (from there is the Shepherd, the Stone of Yisra’el). 25 From the ELOHIM of your father, may He help you; and by the Almighty, may He bless you with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that lies below, blessings of the breasts and the womb. 26 The blessings of your father have prevailed above the blessings of my offspring to the full extent and limit of the everlasting hills. They will be on the head of Yosef, and on the crown of him who was separated from his brothers.
“Binyamin will tear as a wolf. In the morning he will devour the prey, and at evening he will divide the spoil.” 28 All these are the 12 tribes of Yisra’el, and this is what their father spoke to them, and blessed them; every one according to his blessing he blessed them. 29 And he charged them, and said to them, “I am to be gathered to my people. Bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in the field of Efron the Chitti, 30 in the cave that is in the field of Makpelah, which is before Mamre, in the land of Kena’an, which Avraham bought, the field of Efron the Chitti for a burying place. 31 There they buried Avraham and his wife Sarah; there they buried Yitschak and his wife Rivkah; and there I buried Leah. 32 The purchase of the field and of the cave that is in it is from the Chittim.” 33 And Ya’akov finished commanding his sons, and he gathered up his feet into the bed and died, and was gathered to his people.
