Restored English Translation of Matthew: Chapter 1

Well, now that I’ve completed my Restored English Translation (RET) of Esther (or Ester) with Chapter 15.  Today, I present the first chapter of the Besorot Matityahu, commonly known in English as the Gospel of Matthew.  As usual, it contains the Hebrew names, with a glossary of them afterwards.  Also contained is a list of where the Aleph-Tavs occur, as they are no longer included in the main text.

I have based this translation on the Hebrew texts; see The Original Language of the New Testament.  There are several differences from conventional translations: for one, ALL the generations are included here.  This is partly because there are manuscripts that include the missing generations, partly because the form of the Hebrew word for “fathered” in this chapter does not allow for the skipping of generations.

What about Verse 17, which claims there is meant to be 3 groups of 14 generations?  Well, the DuTillet Hebrew text omits the phrase “from David to the deportation to Babel were 14 generations,” which is precisely where the erroneously missing generations are.

Since there are 4 extra generations, I have divided Chapter 1 into 26 verses, rather than the traditional 25.

And then there’s another problem: there’s meant to be 14 generations between the exile to Babylon and YEHOSHUA/JESUS Himself; however, our manuscripts have only 13.

MOST manuscripts, that is; two Hebrew manuscripts of the Shem Tov tradition read “Jacob fathered Joseph, the FATHER of Mary” in verse 16 – rather than the traditional “HUSBAND [or BETROTHED] of Mary” – thus solving the problem. See Matthew 1: Joseph’s Lineage… Or Mary’s?.

Now, on to the chapter!

CHAPTER 1

1 These are the generations of YEHOSHUA HA’MASHIACH, the descendant of David, the descendant of Avraham. 2 Avraham fathered Yitschak; and Yitschak fathered Ya’akov; and Ya’akov fathered Yehudah and his brothers; 3 and Yehudah fathered Perets and Zerach by Tamar; and Perets fathered Chetsron; and Chetsron fathered Ram; 4 and Ram fathered Aminadav; and Aminadav fathered Nachshon; and Nachshon fathered Salmon; 5 and Salmon fathered Boaz by Rachav; and Boaz fathered Oved by Rut; and Oved fathered Yishai; 6 and Yishai fathered David the king; and David the king fathered Shelomoh by the wife of Uriyah; 7 and Shelomoh fathered Rechavam; and Rechavam fathered Aviyah; and Aviyah fathered Asa; 8 and Asa fathered Yehoshafat; and Yehoshafat fathered Yehoram; and Yehoram fathered Achazyah; 9 and Achazyah fathered Yoash; and Yoash fathered Amatsyahu; and Amatsyahu fathered Uzziyahu; 10 and Uzziyahu fathered Yotam; and Yotam fathered Achaz; and Achaz fathered Chizkiyahu; 11 and Chizkiyahu fathered Menasheh; and Menasheh fathered Amon; and Amon fathered Yoshiyahu. 12 And Yoshiyahu fathered Yehoiakim; and Yehoiakim fathered Yechoniyahu and his brothers, about the time they were carried away to Bavel. 13 And Yechoniyahu fathered Shealtiel; and Shealtiel fathered Zerubavel; 14 and Zerubavel fathered Avichud; and Avichud fathered Elyakim; and Elyakim fathered Azur; 15 and Azur fathered Tsadok; and Tsadok fathered Ammon; and Ammon fathered Elichud; 16 and Elichud fathered Elazar; and Elazar fathered Matan; and Matan fathered Ya’akov; 17 and Ya’akov fathered Yosef, the father of Miryam, of whom was born YEHOSHUA, Who is called Messiah. 18 So all the generations from Avraham to David were 14 generations; and from the exile to Bavel to Messiah are 14 generations. 19 Now the birth of YEHOSHUA HA’MASHIACH was this way: when his mother Miryam was engaged to Yosef, before they came together, she was found pregnant of the RUACH HA’KODESH. 20 Then her husband Yosef, being a just man, and not willing to deliver her up to death, or to make her a public example, was inclined to put her away secretly.

21 But while he thought on these things, behold, the messenger of YEHOVAH appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Yosef son of David, do not fear to take Miraym as your wife.  For That which is conceived in her is of the RUACH HA’KODESH. 22 And she will give birth to a Son, and you will call His name YEHOSHUA; for He will save His people from their sins.” 23 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by YEHOVAH by the prophet Yeshayahu, saying, 24 “Behold, a virgin will conceive and will give birth to a son, and they will call his name Emmanuel.” 25 Then Yosef awoke from his sleep, and did as the messenger of YEHOVAH had commanded him, and took her as his wife. 26 And he did not have sex with her until she had given birth to her firstborn son. And he called his name YEHOSHUA.
