The Commonwealth Line of Succession

The line of succession to the thrones of the 16 Commonwealth Realms – Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Canada, Grenada, Jamaica, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu and the United Kingdom, which are joined in personal union (i.e. completely independent, but share a common head of state) – consists of all the legitimate-born non-Catholic descendants of Sophia, Electress of Hanover (1630-1714), a daughter of Frederick the Winter King of Bohemia (1596-1632) and granddaughter of King James VI of Scotland and I of England and Ireland (1566-1625), who descend from her in at least one entirely legitimate-born line. Succession is governed by absolute primogeniture for those born on or after 28 October 2011, and by male-preference primogeniture for those born before that date. The line of succession consisted of over 5700 people in 2011, and likely contains over 6000 persons in 2021, and is believed to be the longest line of succession in the world.

(By extension, this is also the line of succession for the abolished former thrones of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), Fiji, The Gambia, Ghana, Guyana, India, Ireland, Kenya, Malawi, Malta, Mauritius, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanganyika (now Tanzania), Trinidad and Tobago and Uganda.)

The line of succession is governed by the following legislation: the Bill of Rights 1689 and the Act of Settlement 1701 throughout the Commonwealth, the Succession to the Throne Act, 2013 in Canada, the Succession to the Crown Act 2013 in the UK, Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Belize, Grenada, Jamaica, Papua New Guinea, Saint Lucia, Solomon Islands and Tuvalu, the Succession to the Crown Act 2013 in Saint Kitts and Nevis, the Succession to the Throne Act, 2013 in Barbados, the Royal Succession Act 2013 in New Zealand, legislation passed in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines in 2013, and the Succession to the Crown Act 2015 in Australia.

Since the list of people eligible to succeed to the throne is so enormous – and as a result is in a constant state of fluctuation (births and deaths, and less commonly conversion to Roman Catholicism) – I have limited this list to the descendants of monarchs within living memory. The officially recognised oldest living person is 118-year-old Kane Tanaka (born 1903), and therefore I have limited this list to the (legitimate-born, non-Catholic) descendants of King Edward VII (1841-1910), who reigned from 1901 until 1910, who account for the first 111 persons in the line of succession.

The list is divided into 4 parts:

  • Part I: The 23 descendants of the present Queen Elizabeth II (born 1926), who has reigned since 1952
  • Part II: The other 6 living descendants of King George VI (1895-1952), father and predecessor of the current Queen, who reigned from 1936 to 1952, who are the 24th through 29th in the line of succession
  • Part III: The other 48 living legitimate-born non-Catholic descendants of King George V (1865-1936), father and second predecessor of George VI, who reigned from 1910 to 1936, who are the 30th through 77th in the line of succession
  • Part IV: The other 34 other living legitimate-born descendants of King Edward VII (1841-1910), father and predecessor of George V, who reigned from 1901 to 1910, who are the 78th through 111th in the line of succession

Note that King Edward VIII (1894-1972), who reigned in 1936 and was the son and successor of George V and brother and predecessor of George VI, was barred from the line of succession along with all potential descendants when he abdicated, and subsequently went on to have a childless marriage.
