The Greek Heads of State

Since achieving independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1822, Greece has undergone multiple periods of existing both as a republic and as a monarchy. The First Hellenic Republic existed from 1822 to 1832 (as the Provisional Administration of Greece from 1822 to 1827, then as the Hellenic State from 1827 to 1832), with the President of the Executive of the Provisional Administration of Greece serving as head of state from 1822 to 1827, followed by the Governor of Greece from 1827 to 1832. This was followed by the Kingdom of Greece from 1832 to 1924, governed by the King of Greece until 1862, and then the King of the Hellenes from 1863. The Second Hellenic Republic existed from 1924 to 1935, with the President of the Hellenic Republic serving as head of state. The Kingdom of Greece was subsequently restored from 1935 to 1973, with the King of the Hellenes serving as the head of state. A military junta ruled the country until 1974, followed by democratic rule since then, with the President of the Hellenic Republic serving as the country’s highest-ranking official.
