The following were the spouses of the Kings and Queens of Scotland who were married to the sovereign during his or her reign. At the end is a list of spouses who did not become the royal consort, usually because they died early.
The wife of a King was titled Queen of the Picts until the 890s, and Queen of Scotland after that, with many styled Queen of Scots from the 1000s onwards.
There were no rules for the title of the husband of a Queen; out of the 3 male Consorts – who were all married to Mary I – the first two (Francis II of France and Lord Darnley) were titled King of Scotland or King of Scots (as King Consort, not as actual monarch), primarily because Francis was a monarch in his own right, and the third (Lord Bothwell) was created a Duke, but never possessed a royal title.
Prior to the reign of King Macbeth, details about the wives of Scottish kings are scant.
